Rolleston-on-Dove-Heritage-Station

A model project created by Clive Baker.

Built to a scale of 4mm:1ft in EM gauge, recreating Rolleston-on-Dove railway station; opened 2nd November 1894 on the route between Burton upon Trent and Tutbury, opened 1848, the model depicted as accurately as possible how this station would have appeared during its final summer of operation in 1948. The resulting model was featured in the Railway Modeller magazine, issues November 2007 and January 2008, British Railway Modelling, issue June 2017.

Lately the historical scope of the model was extended; due to there being minimal changes to the infrastructure since its opening and with the building of models of earlier rolling stock, the station during the LMS period could be demonstrated.

The working layout appeared at events in Rolleston-on-Dove and exhibitions throughout the Midlands and also the Autumn EM Expo at Partington, Manchester. Following the Covid lockdown the model made its final public experience at the 2023 Stafford exhibition.

Small dioramas have been produced utilising the model buildings constructed for the model. These units can be taken to various events as part of a display pulicising the heritage station at the Rolleston end of the Jinny Nature Trail.

The local passenger train between Burton upon Trent and Tutbury, affectionately known as the "Tutbury Jinny" (see images opposite) gave its name to the nature trail that now follows the route of the railway line between Rolleston-on-Dove and the neighbouring village, Stretton & Claymills.

Not content with an actual model, Clive also generated a virtual 3D model, the renders from it now feature on interpretation panels around the site of the closed station at Rolleston-on-Dove where platforms and some other features have been restored by volunteers, giving an added dimension to walking along the "Jinny Nature Trail". For details about this project, please click Jinny Trail on the top bar. Clive also prepared interpretation panels installed at the site of Stretton & Claymills station.
